Javier Milei at the UN

“The welfare State is a lie and the idea that the State generates wealth is also a lie. The State generates nothing; the State only destroys wealth and all it does is steal it from others to distribute it among friends.” — Javier Gerardo Milei.

President Javier Milei of Argentina, speaking during the General Debate at the 79th Session of the General Assembly of the UN in September 2024, prefaced his remarks by declaring that he was an economist and not a politician.

He basically told them that the collectivist agenda that the UN was following was likely to be disastrous and that it had lost its way. The UN needs to shape up, was his message.

Nicely done, Mr President, very nicely done indeed.

I’m happy for Argentina. I hope he liberates his beloved country and that nobody has to cry for Argentina. Let’s listen to the man. (I believe that the English dubbing from the original Spanish was done by AI.)

The man is good. Who else would end his speech at the UN with a defiant “. . . long live freedom, damn it! Thank you very much”?

  1. China is global battery tech leader today. Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and China follow what is called ‘state-capitalism’ to support domestic companies.

All these nations learnt from the US — how the state plays the role of venture capitalist and drives innovation. Tesla and SpaceX are just two examples.

It takes intellectual honesty to analyze these subjects. Instead of pausing and questioning our deep-rooted biases, we pick our sources of information carefully. Because we fear we will be shattered without those biases.

        1. Let me clarify that I was talking about the general rule about governments not being able to generate wealth; the exceptions you quote prove that general rule

          1. Anup, there are no exception to the rule that governments do not create wealth, and in most cases they destroy wealth.

BTW, “exceptions prove the rule” does not mean that exceptions validate (one meaning of the word ‘prove’) the rule but rather that exceptions test (another meaning of the word ‘prove’) the rule, and in some instances exceptions totally invalidate the rule.
