Johan Norberg on China

The Swedish economist Johan Norberg is a Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute. He is a passionate advocate of capitalism. In his 2023 book The Capitalist Manifesto: Why the Global Free Market Will Save the World he argues for free markets and freedom.

Among his 20 books are In Defense of Global Capitalism, Progress: Ten Reasons to Look Forward to the Future, and Open: The Story of Human Progress. Those two books were recognized as the 2016 and 2020 book of the year, respectively, by The Economist .

All his books are aimed at the informed lay reader. I especially recommend Open as it deals with human progress — a topic that is close to my heart.

Here’s Norberg making the case that the Chinese economy may be going off the tracks and that the West should not try to emulate the Chinese policies.

The Paper Tiger: Why China Won’t Fulfill Its Potential Share

The video notes say:

“While some fear China’s economic and technological dominance, Johan Norberg explains how its increasing authoritarianism and move away from the free market will not only prevent China from becoming rich, but rather risks making it poor again.”

Most of us don’t have the time to read big fat books. Fortunately for us, an hour-long discussion of a book by the author with a competent interlocutor is sufficient for us to get the main points of the book.

Here’s another highly recommended video. In under an hour, you get the gist of his book.

Enjoy.
