Gender Apartheid

“In many countries, one category of human beings don’t even have the right to show their face – that’s apartheid, and it should be the social justice issue of our time.” — Bill Maher.

I enormously enjoy Bill Maher’s HBO show, particularly the segment on “New Rule.” Today I’d like to share this one. He has a wicked sense of humor, and I am sure that he has a great bunch of writers.

Naturally I don’t agree with him on most issues dealing with politics and economics. He’s a leftist and a “progressive”. I’m the opposite. But his social commentary is most of the time spot on. More than most commentators, he funny as all heck.

So here’s one from Bill Maher that I particularly liked. Enjoy. (I was rotflmao at that tent joke.)

  1. while I agree with points made about the apartheid for women in certain countries, thousands of girls and women are raped daily in the non apartheid, free world democracies. Few cases ever come to court and if they do, the perpetrator gets away, especially if the woman is poor or of a lower caste.

It is possible that less women are raped in hijab wearing countries so there may be a tiny silver lining as they are unable to flaunt their enticing bodies as they do in the christian west?

Maybe a girl/woman who has been brutally raped by a man would prefer to have him punished in accordance with Saudi law ie lashes and beheading in public.

Lashes would also be inflicted on the rapist’s parents to deter future assaults by their sons.

  2. Actually the arabs covered their head even before the advent of Islam because of the hot desert sun there. (Sunni)Islam geopolitically is arab culture/nationalism sanctified

As I said before one can always find something ‘good’ or ‘bad’ regarding any religion. Some examples:

    –Christianity promotes mongamy,

–Though India has low grain production per capita and still India exports certain amount of grain because vegetarianism there demands very little fodder crops. If hindus give up their vegetarian diet, it could push up international grain prices. Non-hindus are in debt to hindus.

all religions have something in common:

–At the ground level, relegion basically is being & identity

–Religion does not make people more moral. Morality basically is a set of conducts designed to promote common/tribal social good and there’s no need to promote it through religion.

–All religions have much inertia or ‘resilience’ if one prefers positive lexico.

–The ‘Holier than Thou’ attitude means religions over the long term have tendency to split. Have 2 or more religions ever merged into a single religion ? Yes, it happened only once : The sci-fi classic DUNE describes a religion in the future known as ‘Buddislam’
