Chandan Mitra writes in today’s The Pioneer, “All the Lines on this Route are Blocked” —
Given Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s unimpeachable record of probity even his own party leaders are dumbfounded by his palpable helplessness in acting against a Minister who is lampooned day in and day out by the Opposition and media with hard evidence of brazen corruption. It is widely known that Mr Manmohan Singh made an attempt to rid himself of this man when constituting the UPA 2 Cabinet around this time one year ago. Mr A Raja’s shenanigans had been exposed much earlier and it seemed the Prime Minister had decided to use the opportunity of restructuring his team in the wake of the Congress’s enhanced strength after the 2009 poll. Cabinet formation was delayed by at least three days apparently because Mr Singh insisted on giving the telecom portfolio back to Mr Dayanidhi Maran who held it till he fell from Mr M Karunanidhi’s grace mid-way through UPA 1, although he made a comeback after the pre-election patch-up in the Kalaingar’s family. [emphasis added]
“Singh’s unimpeachable record of probity”? Where the hell does that come from? Like the emperors new clothes?
I think that Manmohan Singh is dishonest. Last year in May I wrote:
PM Manmohan Singh is a dishonest man and is a disgrace to the proud and noble Sikhs, a disgrace to India, a disgrace to the worthy economics profession. He lacks pride in his own self. He’s a toady — one who flatters in the hope of gaining favors. A sycophant. He is what we call in Hindi भाड़े का टट्टू, a horse for hire. Granted that he is basically a civil servant and is trained to follow orders. But surely, he could have been his own man after being appointed the prime minister. Or perhaps he was appointed precisely because of his flexible morality and his ability to follow orders.
I wonder how long it will take before the average Indian voter understands this critically important fact that Mr Singh is as thoroughly corrupt as it is humanly possible to be? Would a person with even the least bit of honesty continue to hang on to his position — where he was placed by his masters — despite repeatedly being called out by the media month after month, year after year?
This May we have reports of the telecom scam. Rewind one year and here’s last May’s story (May 6th in ExpressBuzz titled “It’s the Bofor’s ghost again.”):
. . . on the eve of the elections the CBI, under instructions, has withdrawn the Interpol notice against him and the Italian friend of Sonia Gandhi is a free man. This has been done during the elections, after it has become increasingly clear that the Congress might not be able to form the government.
And everyone knows that in case a government here is able to get Mr Q to justice he will squeal. And that could be worrisome for some.
. . . The Congress has been defending the decision on the record, but privately Congressmen tell critical reporters, “what do you expect us to do, we have to defend this or we will lose our job”. Of course Priyanka Vadra and Rahul Gandhi do not see what the fuss is about, but obviously they know the answer for if there is no need to fuss, there was no need to prime the CBI to save the Italian businessman. It has been a shameful deed, a gross violation of the law, and while there is sufficient information to damn the CBI, the fingers are now pointing very directly at those who are in power and in control. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is amongst those responsible. He makes a penchant of honesty; this is the time for him to explain these murky developments.
The Indian leaders are not known for their vision, intelligence, humanity, or wisdom. What they are known for is their infinite venality and abysmal corruption. That some Indians persist in their insistence that Manmohan Singh is not corrupt in the face of mountains of evidence to the contrary reveals one of two things: they are morally blind and they are remarkably stupid.
It is time to own up to one undeniable fact: Indians are so morally bankrupt that they are absolutely comfortable with corrupt leaders. If it were otherwise, they would not only not vote for them, they would actually lynch them for destroying the country. Or perhaps they are not morally bankrupt but only spineless cretins afraid that they will “lose their jobs” if they stand up and tell Manmohan Singh that he is a despicably dishonest man.
Now if you will excuse me, I have to go throw up — I do every time I read that Blue Turban is an honest man.
[The little picture of the little man was lifted from here.]
For a Congress politician, MMS has no millions stashed in Swiss banks. He has no Italian relatives swinging arms deals in his name. He doesn’t loot the exchequer at all. It’s just that he shuts his eyes tight when others do, because he cannot bear the sight of that obscene loot. It hurts him endless to see all that corruption right underneath his nose. So he plays three monkeys at once: closes his eyes, his ears and mouth. See no evil, don’t hear about it and don’t speak about it — that’s his policy. He sure has an unimpeachable record of probity.

So now we have come to the sorry pass that public rectitude is measured against the most corrupt? Is it now a defense to say that “I stole only Rs 1,000 crores, and therefore I am honest since this sum is considerably less than the Rs 26,000 crores that that minister stole”?
Consider the person who is supposed to guard the treasury. Imagine that when robbers show up, he does not challenge them. He just looks away as he hands the keys over to the robbers. The robbers get away with their loot. The guard says, “I did not benefit one cent from this.” He just did it because he is in the pay of the robbers. Is the guard not despicably dishonest?

MMS is a clerk who has always followed the wishes of the political bosses. Now he is a seat warmer for the congress party. Expecting to do his duty as prime minister is wishful thinking. According to him he is doing his duty which is to keep the seat warm for the prince.
The media has cultivated this image of probity around him which is now parroted out whenever someone tries to make him accountable. The PM in India is finally responsible for all his ministers. The ministers server under his pleasure. By not excercising his power to do the right thing, MMS is more guilty of corruption than his ministers. Does not matter if he did not benefit monetarily; he is not doing the right thing because he wants to hang on to the chair.

Possibly, Oldtimer was being sarcastic! Actually, I’m not even convinced that MMS is not involved in direct corruption. Surely, he can’t be into government for paltry official salary & pension? What was the deal with 1-2-3 agreement, and points like liability of compensation only for 10 years in face of nuclear ‘eventualities’ in the nuclear liability bill?

Atanu, I am not happy to report that you’ve read my comment from across a wide sarchasm.
Fundamentally — that is, speaking from first principles — there’s no place for a truly honest person in the Congress party. On top of it, MMS’s rank dishonesty was known long ago. A decade or so ago he contested LS elections from South Delhi, and lost badly, because he tried to transfer the blame for the 1984 mass murder of Sikhs from Congress to RSS. The experience taught him not to lie so brazenly, yet his crowning glory was achieved when his UPA-1 government bailed out with some very despicable methods after the Left pulled the rug from underneath his feet. (A slimy media outfit helped bury the scam).
Commies and Congies used say that Vajpayee was only a “mask” for the RSS’s hidden agenda. If you are looking for a real mask, look no further, for MMS is the answer. His “honest” facade is the front behind which corruption and sleaze are thriving. His hands personally are clean, of course. I do seriously believe he cannot be accused of personal aggrandizement. Why do you think the Italian-Indian prefers him? People buy even crappy products when they come packaged in attractive wrappers.

Sounds like horrible script writing by a Congresslave trying to pass off as a BJP supporter. Even the BJP wallahs know very well its not gonna happen. So long as MMSes infect our polity, the situation is truly hopeless.
It might change in a few decades. But certainly not in the next election. What is going to happen is Raul Baba is gonna be the next Emperor of the Gandhi dynasty. While MMS will ‘honourably’ retire to a life of peaceful anonymity.

if your inspiration had been alive today, he would have no doubt pointed out that we require a dispossessed prince who is forward thinking and democracy-minded to unseat the current prince who is an usurper of power! i do not take offence at your remarks, for we need motivated minds like you to set us on the path of unbridled and unapologetic development.
bjp has a glorious tradition of letting celibate leaders like vajpayeeji and now modiji stake claim to power so that dynasty does not take place in the ranks (maybe it was due to this karma that even advaniji failed to be pm, and that pramod mahajan, the father of a worthless son had a tragic end). what i mean is that only varun gandhi (also celibate) can break monopoly of the italian mafia in indian politics.
alas, the absence of dynasty is in no way indicator of development mindset that modiji has ushered in – look at mayawathi and the communist party and you will get my point. dynasty, thus is the necessary evil that will break the incumbent dynasty to pave the way for modiji.
i look forward to more of your constructive suggestions on the way forward.

Even a cursory glance at Indian history and its brightest minds will prove how wrong that is.

If Chanakya would have been alive, he would have sided with democracy. Read his works, you will know. He would have struck at the root of corrupt leadership just like he did then. Most importantly, just because he was a great man two thousand years ago does not mean we have to blindly ape his thoughts. And he’s not my inspiration although I admire him greatly.
“…a glorious tradition of letting celibate leaders…”
Celibacy has nothing to do with good leadership. Chanakya was not celibate nor was Chandragupta Maurya. Celibacy while an important part of most Indic religious traditions has nothing to do with politics. It is a personal choice.
DYnastification of politics is not the answer it is the PROBLEM. You merely want to change tyrants not banish tyranny. That won’t work.

even though you may argue that celibacy does not make a great leader, it does. they are not venal and nepotist, as they have no spouse or mistress or child to inherit the throne. hence they are interested only in development. modiji, vajpayeeji and even kalam are thus our greatest leaders. even in business, rathan tata ushered us on the path of world class development by challenging the world with nano.of course, we need real celibates, not fake ones with hidden mistress. in fact, it must become a rule for top position to go only to a celibate leader!!!
this blog is indeed the modern arthashasthra! i hope it will one day be made into a book, but i fear that CONGRESS PARTY will ban it as it exposes ALL THEIR CANARDS! we must wait for modiji come to power to grandly release this book!

Now, A Raja being tainted in very well understandable (I mean I am ready to believe that )…though technically i.e. in the court of law (which BTW he has not been dragged to) he is not guilty of any corruption…
So here is the choice Manmohan Singh has:
First: Fire the guy and deal with useless mess that can be created in the coalition and continue to fire people that till eternity as one will always find corrupt members in the Cabinet no matter how much one wants to try…Problem is that then you will stand and say, MMS is a useless administrator as he is only dealing with his cabinet ministry…
Second Option: Fire the guy..deal with the coalition mess once and then ask other fellow members not to get exposed to media for their corruption else they will be fired; each time such mess arises, MMS should deal with complicating and useless “save the government tactics”…well that is hypocrisy and just to save on getting comments from you, its not worth the worthy mans time…
Third Option: RUN THE BLOODY COUNTRY…and prioritize issues…
I voted for the man who chose to follow option 3…sadly for you..so did majority of fellow countrymen…
And I like your expert comments of reference to your old blog..MMS is Corrupt..ya rite! He invited you over for dinner and shared his account books with you…

Let’s do some analysis based on basic math.
1. Number of years India has been independent = 2010 – 1947 = 62+
2. Number of years Congress Party has been in power at the center = 49 (or thereabouts, with many successive full terms)
3. Number of years BJP was in power at the center = 6 (one full term)
4. Number of years Janata Dal/Janata Party was in power at the center = 7 years (not a single full term)
Yet, according to you, all parties are the same, and other parties need to be hated as much as Nehru-Gandhi party, even though there’s one and only one party that has set the agenda for corruption in politics, pogrom of minorities, sycophancy and dynastic rule.
