Governments Commit Crimes — and Lie About Them

It should come as no surprise that governments lie. Lying is a common human moral failing and no one is immune from it. But the average person lying causes no major harm.

However, when the powerful lie, that is a different matter altogether. Major corporations lie and cause immense harm to millions of people, and cost billions of dollars.

That’s bad for sure but nothing comes close to the harm that governments cause when they lie. That ends up causing immense loss of blood and treasure that is borne not by those who did the lying but by innocent citizens.

About 10 days ago, Julian Assange got released on bail from Belmarsh Prison. They worked out a deal that he would plead to some charges, get sentenced and be released for time served. He was incarcerated in the British prison for over 5 years, and before that he was at the Ecuadorian embassy in London for seven years where he was given asylum. So around 12 years of his life were stolen from him.

I have written about Julian Assange before. I wrote a thread on X recently:

~~~~~~~
“Her Majesty’s Government”, also known as the United Kingdom Government, is certainly not all evil but considered comprehensively across the centuries and around the world, it is as evil as governments get. (From an Oct ’21 post. Hence “Her Majesty”)
**
Her Majesty runs prisons. UK prisons are not the worst in the world but it includes “Her Majesty’s Prison Belmarsh” which has the distinction of being “UK’s Guantanamo Bay”. Julian Assange has been incarcerated in H M P Belmarsh since April 2019. His “crime”?
**
Exposing the criminal behavior of those who run the military-industrial complexes like Messrs. Bush and Blair. Which explains why the British government is punishing him by throwing him into Belmarsh and the US wants him extradited to the US.
**
Belmarsh is for the worst of the worst. Around a third of the inmates are Islamic terrorists. The people of the UK are not as evil as you may expect them to be judging by their government. This is universally true: governments are worse than the people they govern.
**
Economics explains why this pattern emerges. But people do eventually realize that they have been exploited and crimes have been committed by their governments, but unfortunately that comes about after the innocents have been murdered, often by the millions.
**
The lamentable fact is that we “See nations slowly wise, and meanly just, To buried merit raise the tardy bust”, as the great Samuel Johnson (1709–1784) wrote. Two British examples of raising tardy busts come to mind: both were geniuses, both were condemned for being gay.
**
Oscar Wilde (1854 – 1900) was imprisoned in the Her Majesty’s Prison Reading and that basically broke him and killed him. Read Wilde’s “Ballad of the Reading Gaol”. The British government also killed Alan Turing, one of a handful of geniuses of the 20th century CE.
**
In 2009, 55 years after Turing’s death, the British government offered an official public apology for “the appalling way he was treated”, and Queen Elizabeth II granted Turing a posthumous pardon in 2013. My focus is on the UK govt because of what it is doing to Assange.
**
Her Majesty’s Government will probably end up killing him, and half a century later, Her Majesty (or His Majesty, by then) would probably “pardon” Assange for his contribution to humanity. Who knows when and who can tell? We have to resist the evil that governments do.
~~~~~~~~

The US government had asked for Assange’s  extradition to try him on charges of treason. Assange is an Australian citizen. How that works I don’t understand.

Prof. Mearsheimer had made a public appeal to the British Court to not  extradite Assange and to let him go home.

He appeal was ignored.

These days journalists from the mainstream media (MSM) are unfortunately not doing their job. And when a journalists do their job exposing the crime of governments, they get punished.

Fortunately these days, thanks to the internet, independent journalism is making the MSM sort of irrelevant. Tucker Carlson is an example. He was fired from Fox News. So he set up his own channel called TCN – Tucker Carlson Network.

I like Tucker’s take on many issues. At the very least, he’s entertaining. He does have a maniacal laugh, though. But nothing as jarring as Kamala Harris’s cackling.

Tucker was doing a 7-city two and half week tour of Australia. Here’s his take on Assange when he was in Canberra.

The US government is the most evil government ever. It’s much worse than the Third Reich. It’s the most evil because it is the most powerful. More about that later.

Be well, do good work and keep in touch.
