Narendra Modi Scares Some People

In the 10 days that I have been in India, I have traveled quite a bit. First was a road trip from Mumbai to Nashik to see my younger brother. Then a day trip to Ahmedabad/Gandhinagar. Three days ago I came to Kolkata and I’ll return to Mumbai on Tuesday 25th October.

I always talk to fellow travelers. I do this with a specific objective: to understand what the people I meet at random feel about India. On the flight to Ahmedabad from Mumbai, I was seated next to an executive who works for a major multinational corporation. The conversation turned to ease of getting things done in India. I wish to preserve the anonymity of the person and so I will call the corporation Giant Multinational Firm (GMF) which is involved in a wide range of industrial activities globally.

GMF wanted to set up several manufacturing operations in Karnataka. They faced several hurdles but after a great deal of hard work, were able to acquire land. It took them seven months. But they continued to face troubles from the government machinery. Finally they realized that since they did not wish to compromise on their business practices, they would have to abandon their plans to set up shop in Karnataka.

They decided to check out Gujarat. The CEO came down from the US to meet with Shri Narendra Modi. Within four days – not months – they had acquired the clearances; within a couple of months, they had acquired the land; and even before their facilities were completed, rail and road connectivity was ready. The Gujarat government was serious about doing business in Gujarat and Shri Modi was the main driver of the state’s success.

Economic policies matter and are a function of the objectives of the policymakers. If the objective is to industrialize the state, the policies would be friendly to business; but if the objective is to maximize personal gain, naturally then corporations would have to choose whether or not to give in to the demands of the government officials to be able to do business.

The objective of the Narendra Modi government clearly flows from his objective. He is squeaky clean and does not tolerate nonsense. He is not in it for the money and does not tolerate corruption. Good corporations like that and Gujarat is the undisputed leader when it comes to industrial growth and economic development. Which brings me to a question: Why do some people hate Modi so much? Note that I write, “some people” and not just “people.”

Some people have it good in a corrupt system. They don’t want this personally profitable game to end. They understand that if Modi were to be nationally successful as he is regionally today, their game would be up. It’s their self-interest which makes them hate Modi. If Modi had threatened my interests, I am certain that I would have hated Modi as well. But as it happens, my interests and Modi’s interests are exactly the same – namely, to see that India becomes a prosperous country.

If you want to make a list of people who are more interested in their own welfare than the welfare of India, simply make a list of those people who hate Modi. The list would be long and illuminating. Topping the list would be the Congress and the Nehru-Gandhi clan. It would have leftist “intellectuals” and foreigners in positions of power in India. It would have the usual bunch of pseudo-seculars, columnists and TV talking-heads.

Some people in high positions hate Modi because of what would happen to them if Modi ever becomes India’s leader. But there’s another constituency which loves Modi. These are the average guy on the street who is sincerely interested in India’s prosperity – and naturally so since his own destiny is tied to India’s. I meet these people and am gratified by their support of Shri Modi.

The person sitting next to me in the Mumbai-Kolkata flight was categorical in his support for Modi. He was a deputy general manager for a government of India enterprise and was on his way to Assam on work. Without revealing my opinion of Modi, as usual I asked him who among the present leaders would he like as the PM of India. Modi, he answered. Why? His answer, “Because of his integrity, dedication and intelligence.” I agreed.

But Modi is more than that. He is a true nationalist and would defend the nation against all threats, domestic and foreign. His relationship to India is that of a son for his beloved Mother. Vande Mataram.

    Much as I respect your opinions on other matters, I simply can’t understand your stand on Modi.

    What if it is proven in the coming months that Modi has connived in the murder of hundreds of people? Would that make “his relationship to India that of a son for his beloved Mother” or that of a killer? What is YOUR level of confidence that Modi is not a killer? I’m unable to determine the facts but there seems to be very strong likelihood of his being a murderer.

    Modi has recently banned a book, and refused to appoint Lokayukta allegedly in order to protect the corruption of his ministers.

    I can’t seen any logic in your being in favour of freedom and good governance on the one hand and sticking with BJP (and that too Modi) on the other.

    Please do elaborate on a separate blog post if you get the time. We should be working to offer India BETTER alternatives, not those with a very shady past.

    But, it is not clear as why everybody is clamouring for lok ayuta in Gujarat- of all states.

    If that is a serious impediment to “progress”, inspite of having recourse to the ever avaiable normal legal channels of justice, HOW MANY STATES IN INDIA HAVE IMPLEMENTED LOK AYUKTA ??

    Why dont you wait for the judgement? Rational people can change their opinions in the face of new facts. Or didn’t you know that?

    Any proof, Shri Sabhlok? He did not refuse the appointment, he objected to an individual with a less than stellar past. The last I remember, the HC bench trying this was also divided on the correctness of the lokayukta appointment.

    Given how liberally you make breathless leaps of faith and illogic, and take massive liberties with facts to glibly arrive at judgements and conclusions, i too have a conclusion: Your so-called push for an alternative is just a trojan horse for your own self enrichment.

  4. It is in a way shameful how “intellectual” people of India are so opinionated! Some facts might open their eyes unless their ego of being right compell them to do otherwise..
    * most of the Modi bashers I see on tweeter are non gujjus who never has first hand account of what is going on.. I have lived in Gujarat before as well as after Modi came in power; the change is obvious.. No one can deny the development and positive attitude of people.. Hindus as well as Muslims.
    * people including IPS Sanjeev Bhatt who are accusing Modi of wrong doing does not have very credible past and if one studies actual case (other than biased media reports and twisted facts supplied by Modi haters), you will notice that most of these pseudo-seculars are either on someone else’s payroll or have personal interest in criticizing Modi
    * I was in Gujarat during unfortunate 2002 riots- Modi never said anything abt taking revenge or selectively punish/hurt any cast. However, some people just assumed that due to his past ties with RSS, Modi will approve violence and acts of revenge against Muslims. It started as a rumor as “CM won’t mind” which Congress representatives converted to “CM says he won’t mind” during their speeches as they visited temporary camps for displaced people. These statements worked to fuel anger in Muslims against Modi as they wanted but made rioters feel safer to freely carry out more acts of violence.
    * those who think- you have to believe that Modi is a bad man in order to be “cool”; i believe after considering several aspects of everything that happened since 2002, India needs a Modi right now more than ever.. I feel it’s unpatriotic to continue Modi bashing as while you are “just expressing your thoughts”, you might be misleading so many people and causing indirect harm to your country.
    * I am a strong believer of Indian justice system and ask all not to be judgemental, let the law system do their job. If u disagree, spend some time asking some answers about 1984 and 1991. Ask answers about billions of rupees worth corruption charges to lalu, gandhis and other politicians. Modi bashing is not cool or a fashion statement, it’s a disgusting ego laden mindset because the haters haven’t done their homework. Is Modi bad coz media says so? Everyone knows the extent of credibility of Indian news media.
    * I am not attacking anyone’s freedom of speech; just asking u to listen to Modi’s speeches about his ideas about development. I bet he has ideas that none of u would have thought about but if u will listen to them without prejudice, you will know that they are brilliant and doable. He is not a monster some people says that he is! He is a good son of mother India.

    1) What if he is not a murderer? why are you assuming him before the verdict? can’t you wait? or you want to sign off on the media trial.

    2) you are assuming he is corrupt. do you have any proof what so ever? if yes, in what sector, in what area? pls throw us ignorant some light!

    3) are you denying that gujarat is leapfrogging ahead of other states in almost every aspect of development under modi? if you are, can you tell us where gujarat is lagging? (and please don’t quote the 2007 report of indian government on mal-nourishment. i m sure you can do better)

    4) if you hate modi so bad, will you acknowledge that far worse riots (and hence far worse murderers in your opinion) have taken place. like bhagalpur, assam and delhi under the congress regime. if you hang modi will you also hang the congress men? if not, please explain why you are not a first class hypocrite.

  7. The main reason for MSM, INC etc hating Modi would be his direct assault on the Kkkangress perpetrated frauds of socialism and secularism.
    The rotten Kkkangress has ruled in the past for 85% at the centre and the states and is slip-sliding away into nowhere today. It’s politicians in Gujarat were known to stay in Mumbai most of the time and just sign documents sent over to them.Just look at the transformation today: a moribund state has been galvanized into action. I recently came across businessmen who had waited 3 years for clearance in Maharastra, and were given the same clearance in 3 days AT HIS OFFICE! Lee Kwan Yew of Singapore had said that those who generate wealth should be literally put on a pedestal. Modi has done just that and look at the results. Reports suggest that the last two electoral wins for the UPA were unexpected flukes and the public will not tolerate their nonsense this time around.We desperately need Modi at the centre. The sooner the BJP gets its’ act together, the better.

    Interesting article and I notice the overlap between Rajesh and your views – writing style is different though!

    Whilst I have seen Mr Modi’s style at first hand and I fully agree with your article that his focus for getting things done (the closest parallel in America is Chris Christie, nobody in Europe comes to mind – maybe Boris Johnson should aim for this?) would work fabulously on the national level, I would like to understand how you can so equivocally say:

    How can you be so certain he is “squeaky clean”?

    Regarding the riots issue, we will never know, and not that I’m putting any blame on Mr Modi, in my opinion I’d be surprised if people at the top haven’t got their hands dirty in some ways – one can argue ‘for the greater good’.

    The next question is how come he made it to the top and other similar characters can’t do so elsewhere? How can we encourage more like him to succeed?

  15. It is surprising that some intellectuals who have commented on Shri Narendra Modi, did not bother to study why there was no Lokayukta in Gujarat. The government of Gujarat had suggested many names, which was never responded by the opposition, simply because they thought Lokayukta could be the centrally sponsored weapon to use against Mr.Modi. So using this technicality the governor has appointed somebody who is known for his anti Modi views. The Gujarat government always wanted a Lokayukta, but not somebody who will be a stooge of the Gandhi Family. But it is high time the intellectuals study the things beyond what they hear in TV channels and read in ToI.

  17. Sanjeev Sabhlok is a doctrinaire Randian, which qualifies almost anything he says (except which way the sun rose this morning) ludicrous. Sabhlok whines and waxes about the evils of big government and how producers like him have to countenance parasites. But he has no problem living in a lavish welfare state with its high quality infrastructure, education and healthcare, all managed in substantial measure by a very efficient government.

    The media- biased against the Sangh Parivar and the BJP- has written horribly about the Gujarat riots. Innocent well-meaning people have fallen prey to the media’s evil designs. The Gujarat riots were plain riots- not pogrom’ or ‘massacre’. The state government- far from being involved in the riots- handled the riots effeciently and controlled them in 3 days- while riots continued in Gujarat for 6 months in 1969 and 1985 under Congress rule in which close to 10,000 people each were killed. At the time of the 2002 riots, this same English media did report the truth at times. The following facts will make it clear-

    1) On 28 February 2002 , The Hindustan Times reported that the entire police force of 70,000 had been deployed in Gujarat view of apprehensions that riots may break out.

    2) On Feb 28 The Indian Express reported that “(On Feb 27) the state government had deployed the Rapid Action Force in Ahmedabad and other sensitive areas and the Centre sent in CRPF personnel”.. Both these reports were published even before a single riot had taken place.

    3) Riots began in Ahmedabad on Feb 28 at 11 AM . India Today weekly ( 18 March 2002 ) reports that Modi informally requested the Centre for deployment of Army at 12-00 noon i.e. within 1 hour. The same weekly also reports one column of troops reached Ahmedabad at 2-30 AM on 1st March and staged a flag march the same morning at 9 AM.

    4) The same weekly in the issue also says that the then Defence Minister George Fernandes was in Ahmedabad at 2-00 Am on 1st March on Modi’s request and was bravely on Ahmedabad’s streets that morning (1st March) at a great personal risk.

    5) The Hindu reported on 1st March 2002 that, “The Army units, frantically called by the Chief Minister, Narendra Modi…started arriving in Ahmedabad…”.This shows that some Army units reached Ahmedabad so quickly on Feb 28 that The Hindu had time to report their arrival on Feb 28 itself and publish it on 1st March!

    6) Out of 18,600 villages, 240 towns and 25 district headquarters, hardly 60 places saw riots. One-third of Gujarat, i.e. Saurashtra and Kutch were completely unaffected by riots even in the first 3 days. After the first three days- riots were limited to Ahmedabad, Vadodara and some places near Godhra- and almost all were started by Muslims.

    7) In the first three days- Gujarat police shot dead 98 rioters- majority of whom were Hindus. On 1st March, The Hindu reported that- “At least 10 people have been killed in police firing in Ahmedabad alone by evening (of Feb 28)”. Then on 2nd March, The Indian Express reported that “Police shot dead 20 people in Gujarat, 12 in Ahmedabad, on 1st March”. Then on 3rd March, Indian Express reported-“77 more people have been killed in Police/ Army firing (on 2nd March)”. Then on 2nd March ‘The Hindu’ reported that-“Unlike Feb 28 when one community was entirely at the receiving end, the minority backlash on 1st March has further worsened the situation.”

    8) The Times of India dated 18 March 2002 devoted a complete report titled, “Riots hit all classes, people of all faith” on Hindu victims of the riots and says, “Contrary to popular belief that only Muslims have been affected in the recent riots more than 10,000 persons belonging to the Hindu community have also become homeless”.

    9) The Indian Express devoted two full reports exclusively to Hindu victims in Ahmedabad in its issues dated 7 May 2002 and 10th May 2002. The victims were not only homeless; they did not even have relief camps to live in, and hence had to live in temples.

    10) India Today weekly reports in its issue dated 27 May 2002, “A series of attacks by Muslims on policemen has further added to mutual lack of faith. Now strapped with the anti-Muslim label, the police has been slow in acting against Muslim fanatics”.

    11) India Today (27 May 2002) also gives details of attacks on Hindus by Muslims. The same weekly reports in its issue dated 15 April 2002 that- “A young Hindu went to Himmatnagar (Muslim) area of Ahmedabad to do business and was found dead, with his eyes gouged out”. This issue also gives details of Muslim aggression.

    12) India Today weekly dated 22 April 2002 also reports that ‘Gujarat police saved 2,500 Muslims from certain death in Sanjeli, North Gujarat on 1st March 2002’. The weekly also says- ‘Like Sanjeli, 5,000 Muslims were also saved in Bodeli town in Vadodara district by the police’ and ‘Thousands of Muslims were also saved in Viramgam town from 15,000 armed Hindus’ by police and the Army. The UPA government- staunchly anti-BJP, has given figures of 790 Muslims and 254 Hindus killed in the Gujarat riots, and 223 missing, in Rajya Sabha on 11 May 2005. A total of 790 Muslims were killed in the riots- more than thrice that number were saved on one day at a single place.

    13) Throughout Gujarat riots- there are only two instances of real anti-Muslim riots-The Ehsan Jafri case and the Naroda Patiya case. In the Ehsan Jafri case, the police shot dead 5 Hindus outside his house and saved the lives of more than 200 Muslims. There were 250 people inside Jafri’s house and the mob killed 39- with police saving more than 200- despite being overwhelmingly numbered by the rioters who were more than 10,000..

    14) There have been 4 convictions of Muslims for rioting after Godhra and Muslims were given various sentences. 4 Muslims were convicted by a Vadodara fast track court on 16 October 2003 and given life imprisonment. Ex-Vadodara Deputy Mayor and Congress leader Nisar Bapu was acquitted, but his son and son-in-law were convicted. This was reported in at least three English dailies, including The Times of India dated 17 October 2003. 9 and 7 Muslims were convicted in two separate judgments on 18 and 28 March 2006 by fast track courts in Ahmedabad- reported by all major English dailies the next day. Muslims were hardly the cattle hiding from the slaughter house that the media makes them out to be. The conviction of Muslims proves that Muslims were equally on the offensive.

    The newspaper editors and others who call the Gujarat riots as a ‘holocuast’, ‘pogrom’, ‘genocide’ or ‘massacre’ should look at their own newspapers’ reports on these very things. Will these facts awaken the conscience of the newspaper editors and journalists and ofcourse the electronic media and make them reveal the bitter truth of the Gujarat riots- that even after Godhra, the riots that followed were not one-sided?

  20. Even though the situation was terrible, the police performed its work extremely efficiently. The police force was woefully insufficient. Uday Mahurkar reports for India Today (18 March 2002):

    “Ahmedabad has a police force of 6,000, including 1,500 armed personnel. In addition, the entire state has just four companies (530 jawans) of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) of which only one company could be spared for Ahmedabad. Considering that the mobs that simultaneously surfaced at nearly half a dozen places numbered from 2,000 to 10,000, the forces proved woefully inadequate. At one point on February 28 there were at least 25,000 people targeting the Muslim localities in Ahmedabad alone.”

    Despite this, the police fired more than 3,900 rounds in the first three days alone. As many as 98 people were shot dead by the police in the first three days, majority of whom are Hindus. For the complete period of rioting, despite the presence of the Army, the police fired as many 15,000 tear gas shells, and a total of 10,500 rounds. Out of the total people killed in the riots, about 20 % have been shot dead by the police.

    Infact- the encyclopaedia wikipedia reports-based on sound sources-that as many as 200 policemen laid their lives trying to quell the violence during the riots.

    Out of the 25,486 accused, the Gujarat police arrested as many as 25,204 people. This clearly shows the efficiency of the Gujarat police. On March 1st and 2nd and afterwards, Muslims too rioted and they too were killed in police firing.

    The Gujarat police saved as many as 2,500 Muslims in Sanjeli, a town in North Gujarat, 5,000 Muslims in Bodeli, in Vadodara and about 10,000 Muslims in Viramgam. A total of about 24,000 Muslims were saved in the first three days alone. Police officials themselves suffered injuries in trying to save the Muslims, as reported by the weekly India Today.

    On February 28, the police shot dead 10 Hindus in Ahmedabad alone. The leading most English daily from South India, and an extremely anti-Hindu newspaper, ‘The Hindu’ reported this on 1st March 2002. On 1st March, the police shot dead 17 people in Ahmedabad alone-as reported by The Hindu dated 2nd March 2002.
    On 2nd March 2002-police firing resulted in 47 deaths-as reported by The Hindu the next day-i.e. 3rd March 2002.

    1-The Indian Express dated 28th February 2002 reported that the State Government had deployed the Rapid Action Force in Ahmedabad and other sensitive areas and the Centre sent in CRPF personnel-on February 27 itself even before a single riot had taken place. This was also reported by Mid Day dated 28 February- and also The Times of India.

    4-827 preventive arrests were made on the evening of February 27 itself-on Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s orders-on his return to Ahmedabad from Godhra. This was reported by weekly India Today dated 18 March 2002.

    5-On February 28 -despite the deployment of the entire police force, the CRPF personnel and the Rapid Action Force-the situation slipped out of control-according to The Hindu dated 1st March 2002.

    6-Despite the fact that the situation slipped out of control-the mob sizes were unpreceedented-and the police were overwhelmingly outnumbered-the police did its best. The police fired more than 1,000 rounds on the first day of the riots-i.e. February 28.

    5 Hindus were shot dead outside Ehsan Jafri’s house on Feb 28-according to India Today weekly-dated 18 March 2002.

    8-Curfew was clapmed in Godhra on 27 February itself-as reported by The Hindu dated 28 February 2002. Also reported by all English dailies- such as Times of India- dated 28 Feb.

    9-An indefinite curfew was clamped in 26 cities and towns in the State, including parts of Ahmedabad, Surat, Baroda, Rajkot, Nadiad, Anand and Kaira on February 28 in addition to the indefinite curfew in force in Godhra since February 27-according to The Hindu dated 1st March 2002- and every English daily the next day and also weeklies- like India Today- which covered events till Feb 28 in its issue dated 11 March 2002.

    12-The Army staged a flag march in Ahmedabad on 1st March 2002 at 11:30 AM-as reported by weekly India Today in its issue dated 18th March 2002. The Hindu and The Indian Express and all major dailies also reported that the Army staged flag marches in Ahmedabad-and also Vadodara on 1st March 2002.

    13-The Army began flag marches in the worst-affected areas of Ahmedabad, Baroda, Rajkot and Godhra cities and the `shoot at sight’ order was extended to all 34 curfew-bound cities and towns in Gujarat on 1st March 2002-as per The Hindu dated 2nd March 2002.

    14-The Gujarat police fired a total of around 4,000 rounds in the first three days alone. This-despite the presence of the Army for 2 out of the 3 days. The police also arrested more than 4,000 people in the first 3 days alone- majority of whom are Hindus. As on 6 May 2002- 35,000 people had been arrested for rioting by the police- the highest ever in Gujarat- not even in 1969 and 1985 were so many arrested. On 28 April 2002- The Times of India reported that 9954 Hindus and 4035 Muslims were arrested by police as substantive arrests and 17947 Hindus and 3616 Muslims were arrested as a preventive measure. This gives a total of 27,901 Hindus and 7651 Muslims arrested as on 28 April 2002- a total of 35,552 arrests- the highest ever in Gujarat.

    15-The Gujarat police shot dead 98 people in the first three days-majority of whom are Hindus.

    16-The Hindu reported in its issue dated 4th March 2002-that only 2 deaths were reported on 3rd March in the entire state-and the violence has ended on 3rd March 2002. Thus-the Gujarat government managed to control the situation in 3 days-even after the shocking massacre in Godhra-while it took previous Congress governments 6 months to stop the riots in 1969 and 1985-even without any cause as Godhra.

    i am based at ahmedabad.yr observations are absolutely correct.

    any killings either of sabarmati express passengers or innocent people of any community is not good.killings of innocent people in past riots for no of years in congress rules which were fabricated for political purposes in gujarat were also not good.killings on innocent people in delhi post Indira gandhi’s killing directed by Sajjan and tytler (congress leaders )were also not good.Killings of thousands people in J& k in congress rules at center for years are also not good.favour of any community for political gains is not good.why Modi only hated?

    regarding corruption, high level corruption at big corporate level may be there not proven although (unavoidable in current political system ), favours to corporates are in transperent manner and are directly co -related with developement and growth.net result is growth, vision is there , long term planning and implementation is there.

    comparing other political leaders he is a far far better ruler for country. better he comes at center at the earliest….and of course with a clear majority not like Atalji at old age and with compulsions of mamata,maya , jaya……….
