Edvige Antonia Albina Maino aka “Sonia Gandhi”

Censorship comes naturally to the Congress — since they have a lot of conceal and hide. It would be too damaging to their fortunes if Indians got to know the truth. The Indian motto reads, “Satyam Eva Jayate” (Truth Alone Prevails). The Congress have persistently tried to see that “Asatyam Eva Jayate” (Lies Alone Prevail). It did work in the past, and to some extent it continues to work. But times are a changin’ and it will not be long before Indians wake up to satya.

For some, it’s been a lonely trek so far. They have persevered for years trying to shine some light on the lies. Dr Subramaniam Swamy, National President of the Janata Party, has been tireless in his efforts to reveal the truth. “Do you know your Sonia?” asks Dr Swamy and then goes on to expose, among other things, Three Lies about Edvige Antonia Albina Maino aka “Sonia Gandhi”.

But them internets (or interwebs, if you like) is an awesomely mighty weapon against lies. Too many Indians are getting access to the internets and it is getting rather hard for the Congress to keep things under wraps. Just as an aside, the Congress will try its best to retard the growth of the web in India.

Anyway, the Congress is once again up and about trying to censor a book by a Madrid-based writer, Javier Moro, titled “El Sari Rojo” (The Red Sari). MSN News reports that “Cong targets Sonia’s ‘Red Sari’“:

First published in October 2008, the book has already been translated into Italian, French and Dutch, and an English translation by Peter Hearn is ready for publication.
. . .
In an email, Moro, 55, said that Sonia’s lawyers, including Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi, “have just written to my Italian and Spanish publishers to demand the withdrawal of the book from the stores. Nobody understands very well why, but that’s what they are up to”.

Moro thinks that the Congress leaders “did not like the recreation of her life in Italy as told in my book”.
. . .
The novel mentions Christian von Stieglitz as “the friend who introduced her to Rajiv when they were students”, describes Congressmen persuading a reluctant Sonia to accept the presidency of the party, and then, in flashback, goes to the “village of Lusiana in the Asiago mountains in the foothills of the Alps”.

There, “in accordance with tradition the neighbours tied pink ribbons to the bars on the windows and doors” when Sonia was born in December 1946, a post-war child. Writes Moro, “A few days later, she was christened by the Lusiana parish priest and given the name of Edvige Antonia Albina Maino.” But her father Stefano called her Sonia. “In this way, he kept the promise he made to himself after getting away from the Russian front with his life.”

According to Moro’s book, Stefano was part of Mussolini’s army that was defeated by the Russians. “There were thousands of prisoners, among them Stefano, who managed to escape together with other survivors. They succeeded in taking shelter in a farmhouse on the Russian steppes, where they lived for weeks under the protection of a peasant family…. As a tribute to the family that had saved his life, he decided to given his daughters Russian names.”

You will not find the above very surprising if you have been following what Dr Swamy has been saying for years. It is not news that Antonia Maino’s father was a soldier in a fascist (in the original sense of the word) army. The Congress cannot afford that that becomes common knowledge.

Although just because her father was a fascist need not imply that Antonia Maino is a fascist. What is worrisome is that a foreign-born person wields so much power in India. Naturalized citizens are all good and fine but they should not be allowed to be in positions of high power. The US recognizes this and does not allow non-native born citizens to become the president of the US.

It is undeniable that humans have loyalty to their place and nation of birth. Only psychopaths and severely mentally handicapped people can totally sever the ties to their motherland. To the average human, loyalty to one’s faith, one’s place of birth and one’s family comes naturally. So claims that she does not have loyalty to her nation of birth are either false or she is a psychopath.

Indians take great pride in the achievements of not just of Indians abroad but even those whose ancestors were Indians. This is a two-way street: Indians or people of Indian origin care about India and feel a deep connection with it. This is all natural and good — and expected.

I speak from personal experience. More than half my adult life was spent in the US. I voluntarily got myself an American passport. I love living in the US, most of my friends and acquaintances live in the US, and I miss living there. Both India and the US are home to me. But my feelings for India are most certainly deeper than my feelings for the US. Every time I arrive in India from abroad, I get goosebumps recalling Sir Walter Scott’s poem:

Breathes there the man with soul so dead
Who never to himself hath said,
This is my own, my native land!
Whose heart hath ne’er within him burned,
As home his footsteps he hath turned
From wandering on a foreign strand!

What does Antoina Maino feel when she steps on her native land? Does her heart within her burn with feelings of coming home? Which side will she be on if there’s a conflict between Italy and India?

I cannot imagine her not putting her own children’s interest ahead of any adopted children. It is natural and commendable. I cannot imagine her not putting her native land’s interests ahead of her adopted land.

Indians need to understand this.

  1. Dear Atanu

You have written “Only psychopaths and severely mentally handicapped people can totally sever the ties to their motherland.”

I can give you several examples to counter this argument. But would stick to just one : Ayn Rand – born Russian, but migrated to USA, a staunch opponent of Russia and communism. She severed all ties to her motherland. She is considered an intellectual giant, and by no ways a psychopath/mentally handicapped

    1. Dear Shantanu:

You have a point about Ayn Rand. There are exceptions if one digs closely enough — and as they say exceptions prove (in the sense of the word meaning “test”) the rule. The thing is that Antonia Maino is no Ayn Rand. First, Ayn Rand had a reason for hating her motherland for its communism. She disavowed her motherland. Has Antonia Maino done that? Second, Ayn Rand took up American citizenship without having to be goaded into it. Did you know that Antonia Maino took 17 years to apply for Indian citizenship and that too when it was required she be an Indian citizen as her husband was taking his hereditary seat as the ruler of India?

I have a great deal of respect for Ayn Rand and I do not appreciate seeing her mentioned in the same context as Antonia Maino aka Sonia Gandhi. I would thank you to be considerate enough to not insult the memory of Ms Rand.

  2. Atanu, your whole argument is built on flimsy grounds.

As you have conceded, Sonia’s father’s background as a fascist (alleged) is not relevant at all. My grandfather was an ICS officer and probably acted on British orders to get many Indians arrested or lathi-charged. That doesn’t make me anti-national. Probe deep enough and you’ll find skeletons tumbling out of anybody’s family cupboard.

A dispute between Italy and India is far less likely than one between India and Pakistan. As Advani was born in what is now Pakistan, and as you say one’s loyalty to one’s place of birth remains paramount, I would worry more about Advani becoming PM and taking the side of Pakistan in a dispute.

The US may not allow non-native born citizens to become the President of the USA. So what? Should we be guided by what the US does, in all our policies?

I think Sonia has demonstrated enough Indianness in her behavior, in her respect for Indian traditions and culture and in her general deportment.I would grant her the status of a ‘deemed Indian’.

Sonia may be faulted on her politics, her willingness to tolerate corruption within the party/the Govt, her closed coterie, etc – but these are all blemishes that have nothing to do with her Italian origin.

It’s time you stopped raising the issue of her nationality. It doesn’t cut ice any more and makes you sound like a bad loser. If you want to score points, try to expose her other run-of-the-mill political weaknesses.

leave apart all the arguments made by Atanu. Do you as an Indian feel proud, that a widow of Ex PM is the only person you can find to lead the country???

And would you care to explain why is it that the Congress so badly wanted her at the helm??

While she does bring along the Gandhi name, which has its advantages in (a still) feudal India, the real reason probably is money!

It was the congress money which she held as wife Cong Prez. And which is what drives all of Indias politics.
(BTW have also heard a more juicy story of why Jagan is still not AP CM – apparently his pop still owes bigtime to high command)

The most common reason given for SGs taking over Congress – if not for her, the party would have disintegrated – way too many leaders wanting to become PM… Dont you think it is absolutely shameful that a 100+ year old party, still cannot run itself. India will almost certainly be better off, if this stupid party was completely disbanded (i think the original Gandhi had suggested this in 1947).

It is not about skeletons, it is about rotting corpses. Her complicity with foreign powers cannot be ruled out.

So what? Everything. How many others countries allow it??? Care to mention that?

“I think Sonia has demonstrated enough Indianness in her behavior, in her respect for Indian traditions and culture and in her general deportment.I would grant her the status of a ‘deemed Indian’.”

So much Indianness that she did not even deign to learn any Indian language even decades after she moved to India.
And I could go on but a cursory reading of the articles by Dr. Subramanian Swamy will help you more.

BTW there are several foreigners to whom India will remain indebted forever. There service will never be forgotten. Sonia Maino is not one of them.

  5. Jai, Chanakya : I have not made Sonia out to be a saint. Nor have I said that she deserves to be our PM, by virtue of being a widow of an ex-PM. I have just said that her faults or alleged crimes have nothing to do with her Italian origin.I don’t understand the paranoia over her Italianness.

“She did not deign to learn any Indian language”. Not true. Hell, she makes election speeches in Hindi.

“Her complicity with foreign power cannot be ruled out”. By this reasoning, nobody’s complicity can be completely ruled out. But, default setting is ‘innocent’ till proved guilty.

“Not true. Hell, she makes election speeches in Hindi.”

Did you listen to her reading out speeches written in English/Italian
when she started her public political career. She did not bother to learn any Indian language until a public career demanded it. Anybody can speak Italian written in Hindi. Granted, she has improved with practice.

  10. ‘She’s not the issue. we are.’ I have been a lurker in these forums for long now, but I feel I must object to the commonly held belief that democracy is an (stochastically) infallible system and the only people who are to blame are the voters. Democracy is predicated on two major prerequisites:

    1. That the participants are allowed freedom to chose. This is the prerequisite given most space in the zeitgeist these days, what with the emergence of political blogs, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and other events that had a major impact on the international scene.

    2. That the participants have access to all required information about the choices they can make. This is a very important prerequisite, but hardly mentioned in the media (more a sin of omission than commission IMO, since it has always been assumed a given).

While the media and other legislating bodies the world over have made sure that the freedom to make a choice is well defended, the freedom to information has been deprived a champion. Hence, democracy seems to be failing in India since the voter lacks the tools to make an informed choice, and hence makes the choice that is either the most ‘attractive seeming’ (politicians with clean images, good narratives, etc) or the one most likely to bring short term reward (NREGA, free rice in TN, buying votes with alcohol, etc).

The mainstream media being more a tool to amuse rather than inform people, I believe the internet is the only medium with the potential to disseminate information to a large number of people, and this site is a good step forward, providing an alternative to the mindless mainstream media narrative.

  11. Thats right. Do you think Americans would elect a Hindu who never graduated college to rule them? Never. Also it is not about being foreign it is about being educated and having a vision and bringing nothing new to the table which should be emphasized. If there was a foreigner who took up the Indian religion, who really had a knowledge of India, who had very impressive credentials, who was educated and had a vision, I don’t see a problem with them being leaders. Also this lady never changed her religion after marriage–and the religion of her husband is also dubious. I remember Rajiv Gandhi made a speech when he visited Kashmir that he was not a Hindu (or a member of a native faith of India (what religion is this family really?) These kinds of things are important for an electorate to consider and all electorates consider it apart from India. I find disturbing that this lady only has been a housewife, never seems to have worked as any kind of professional and now makes decision requiring a high degree of experience and intelligence and statecraft, wearing a sari does not make one familiar with India or understand India. But then her mother in law also was a college drop out and also her husband. As Kautilya says, the problem is Hindus not her–she seems a clever person to wield such power…it is the Hindus who have made her what she is…Seems like their slave like mentality can never be erased. So its not really about being foreign, but about having an education and vision to lead a country that should be emphasized. I remember in America people criticized the credentials of Kennedy’s daughter, who is a lawyer by trade as having no experience and she had to drop out of the Governatorial race. But in India balanced criticism does not seem to happen..I think Sonia represents the large unwashed, illiterate masses of India whose votes can be bought by Congress, she does not represent educated middle class Indians who want real leaders with education and vision to lead them and are tired to college dropouts as party leaders…So stop emphasizing the inessential qualities but place emphasis on the real ones, so the critique carries weight and substance. Even in Italy would the people have a housewife of a party leader lead them who has never worked in a professional capacity? No. They would find another leader. So it is not her but Indians. Who would not want power if it was offered on a silver platter? Hindus need to get rid of their slave mentality first and then they can have real leaders to lead them….

    Like

  12. Also it is important to criticize in a meaningful way. For instance, if this lady had been the housewife of a Party Leader in Italy would Italians then ask her to lead them after her huband. The same analogy be made of the husband and the mother-in-law. Not a chance! So what makes her special in India? Nothing except the mentality of Indians makes such people leaders and makes people want to follow them. So one has to really ask whether Indians are congenitally incapable of ruling themselves as Macaulay like to say…

thats not true. When your motherland treats you like garbage and gives you no protection from terrorism, does not protect you against injustice or thuggery, does not reward you for loyalty and hard work, does not offer you a justice system that works then many people sever ties, i.e. immigrate and are loyal and dedicated to the new country that gives them security and laws and justice that works…although they might like to see their motherland do well in their minds out of some remote sympathy still in their minds for the land in which they were born…Many people moved to the New World for the above reasons….

“motherland” should read government or the established power elite. For every moron in government or bigoted dunce with a massive superiority complex, you will find many who will lend you a helping hand. India is in a pathetic condition because the colonial power structure was never dismantled.
It is easy to run away and promote that as virtue. It is tougher to do the right thing – to stay and fight. Going by your logic the French should have given in to the Nazis. The Japanese, the Koreans shouldn’t have rebuilt their countries.
India’s biggest weakness is its vast ignorant majority who are deliberately kept that way. And the so-called liberals and intelligentsia side with the Congress – worst thing to have happened to India ever.

Oh please don’t moralize! Have you lived in places like Kashmir and seen your ethnic group raped and killed and thousands of Hindus displaced and living refugee camps still in their own country having lost everything, and I mean everything? Many people are out of those camps and are doctors and engineers by their own hard work with no government help as this was a highly educated community that was displaced, but the lives of thousands are still messed up. Tell those people to have loyalty. When you live in places like that you see that the State is basically non-functional and those in power do not care to protect their own people. A good friend of mine who had to leave told me that he realized that the Indian state is useless and the so called “democracy” in India is a lie when his family had to leave their home (its not possible to fight back when you the original peoples have been reduced to a tiny minority in your own home state due to conversions of fold in the course of centuries) and they lost everything and had to start a new life elsewhere. Tell people like to love their country and you will see the right reaction! But still these groups try from abroad to put pressure on the government to have HIndus living there again because they know that the government does not give two hoots!

  16. It is not about moralizing. It is about survival. Not everybody can afford to “run away”. My point was about:

“Many people moved to the New World for the above reasons…”
“Tell those people to have loyalty.”

If nobody takes a stand then what you get is what you deserve. The plight of Hindus in Kashmir is a national shame. All right-thinking people are doing whatever they can to mitigate that disaster. And I do have Kashmiri friends. They did not give up just like that. They did fight back. And they love their country very much. Two of them have joined the Indian army despite having an option of migrating to the New World.
There is a difference between the government and the country. The government is not composed of patriotic Indians, just a bunch of obsequious quislings who have mastered the art of deception and corruption.

“…State is basically non-functional and those in power do not care to protect their own people…”

The state is very much functional. They systematically undermine all indigenous cultures especially Hinduism. And they do protect their own people – Muslims and lefties.

  17. Well that is your opinion. As for me I have no objections to people who go elsewhere to seek a better life and have loyalty to the place that gives them a better life after. If you have ever lived in the fringe states like Jammu, Kashmir and elsewhere you realize quickly the ineffectiveness of the Indian State. While it is good to put up the fight, I also do not cast judgment on people who choose to leave and moralize them. And as for Kashmiri Pandits, no one helped them–I know that–the people who have gotten out of camps have mostly helped themselves…I applaud those who have escaped refugee camps in their own country and have make a success of themselves elsewhere after losing everything and I would never say that they did not “put up a fight”.

  18. As a former citizen of India, I too resent Edvige Antonia Albina Maino (EAAM) in a high position of governance. However, she side-stepped actually holding the office of Prime Minister and is unlikely to do so in the future, given her son’s plans. So India is spared from the precedent, yet she surely ‘rules by proxy’. The fact that the Despicably Dishonest Man Manmohan Singh is worse than a string puppet dancing to her slightest gesture (I can never forget his groveling in front of his queen on the day of his inauguration as PM) is entirely his fault. I submit that he henceforth be called Despicably Dishonest Groveling Craven Manmohan Singh Ji on this blog.

I am not terribly concerned about EAAM’s stance towards Italy only because, fortunately, Italy and India barely have common points of contention that matter. However, I believe it is beyond EAAM’s ability to appreciate the Hindu identity or cultural heritage of India, or realize the magnitude of the grave threat posed to India’s existence (warts and all) by the violent and immoral Islamic lunatics committed to destroying it via jihad and propaganda. Her background and demonstrably shallow intelligence in this respect results in weakening of both India’s polity and national identity.

In Plato’s Republic Plutocracy is the ultimately corrupt from of democracy and the last stage of the corruption of democracy ends in tyranny. Forget about her emasculated stooges, I think it is sad for highly educated, qualified, bright Indian women for their country to have a leader like this to represent their country…Seems like intelligent people avoid politics these days. What happened to real men in India who are able to be leaders?
Also it is dangerous when politics becomes a “full time” occupation for when it becomes the only source of bread and butter for many people you can be sure they will get corrupt. A better system is when people voluntarily go into it–while having a real source of livelihood elsewhere as highly skilled people. Such a system I belive would get rid of the leeches in the political system (especially in a country like India) who have no other ways of making a living. If you look at the History of the United States, for example, the founding fathers were highly intelligent men who devoted spare time to politics out of concern for country while having the real source of livelihood elsewhere.

Secondly, as a reply to, “she is not the problem, we are.”. What do you expect one to do? She might have done it for the sake of Congress, she might have done for the sake of children or just for being an ex-PM’s wife or just for the sake of money, she is at least trying to be secular and help the nation by giving a strong government. She has got the right man at the right places, for most of the ministry and that is what she can do at her best for my country. For me, India is an idea, and she is the best option available which captures the idea of one India.

I don’t see any problem with still continuing the doctor.

The point being, there is an almost zero percent possibility that she will someday have to make a choice between helping Italy and helping India. So, till the time, she isn’t favoring the entry of Italians to India, or allowing Italian businesses in India, I can’t see a lot of potential harm as compared to the possible benefits.

(In case, you might want to cite Quatrochhi over here, and her accused friendship with him. Well, even if all that is true, being Italian should not be the issue, that’s just politics. Mr. Fernandes did a pretty huge scam too. He doesn’t lose his nationality for that.)

Who is SONIA GANDHI? ( Every Indian Should Know This )
    Who is Sonia Gandhi:
Ther…e is officially no Sonia Gandhi. Her real name in passport is neither Gandhi nor Sonia. Its Edvige Antonia Albina Maino. Sonia is a Russian name and not italian. However, Antonia is an italian name and her passport is italian. Though she has married Rajiv Gandhi* she never accepted change of title officially. ( recall the time of turmoil in indian politics when Sonia Gandhi was trying to be the prime minister, but ultimately ManMohan Singh became her toy)

*Rajiv Gandhi: Actually Rajiv Khan being the son of Firoz Khan and Indira Priyadarshani. Gandhi is an assumed title to sentimentally lure indians for their political benefit. They are muslims by religion.

    Father:
Stefano Eugene Maino is socially the father of Sonia. Her father was a German(hitlers army). When Hitlers army went to russia they were captured and imprisoned. He was captured near St. Petersburgh and was imprisoned for 20 years. But he became a member of KGB and his imprisonment was limited to 4 years. When he came back from prison he gave russian name to his daughters. Social father because when she was born her father was in jail for 4 years. Biological father is unconfirmed.
    Mother:
    Paula Maino.
    Family:
She had 2 sistersin Orbassano, italy
    Birthplace
Sonia claims she was born in Besano, near Turin in italy. However, as per her birth certificate, She is actually born is Luciana, in the borders of Switzerland. A resort town for German soldiers during war.
    Education:
She initially put forward to Indian Govt. that she studied in Cambridge University which proved to be fake. She submitted an affidavit that she studied english in Bell Education trust at Cambridge. Even this was proven to be fake and was found she never got any education after class five. She was a young girl with no formal education living five years in england. How did she support her livelihood for 5 years? Any wild guesses?
    Citizenship:
She has not given off her italian citizenship. Indira Gandhi used her power to issue her an Indian Citizenship so that she can join Indian politics. She is holding an illegal citizenship in India. No action is being taken by Home Minister.
    Religion:
    Cristianity.
    Bank Balance:
Rajiv Gandhi and his family owned 2 billion USD in Swiss Bank as of November,1991. Benefitiary of death of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi was Sonia Gandhi.
    Family:
Sonia’s sister Alexandria(or Anuska) has 2 shops in Italy selling antiques stolen from India. Sonia used her power to smuggle indian artifacts through Air India flights uninspected.
Sonia’s son Rahul Gandhi, whose real name is Raul Vinci. He got admitted to Harvard in quota but was thrown off soon because he was incompetant. He has italian citizenship since his mother never gave up her citizenship. He cannot officially become the citizen of india or any politician in india as long as he doesnt give up his italian citizenship. Arrested in Boston airport for carrying 160,000 dollars cash, accompanied by Veronique (spanish). veronique is the daughter of Drug mafia leader. Rahul has also been accused for gang raping Sukanya Devi, whose petition to all courts in India have been rejected due to their political hold and the whereabouts of the family is unknown. However, the information is widely available online.
