Bomb Blast in Pune

This evening there was a bomb blast at a bakery in Koregaon Park in Pune. A few dozen killed. Not a big deal. Indians don’t mind such minor inconveniences. Indians take mass-scale murders in their stride and don’t blink. We will read in the newspapers about the resilience of the population tomorrow, especially in The Times of India.

We will read how Mr Blue Turban has responded with very strong words condemning the terrorism. Nothing to get excited about. It happens. Indians are resilient. They are more interested in movies — “My Name is Khan” is playing and the movie halls are full. They are Indians who watch Mr Khan prance about. The audience is not comprised of Martians, not even people much beloved of Mr Khan, the Pakistanis. Mr Khan cannot be blamed, though. It is a free country and Indians choose to make a hero of a person who should more accurately be understood to be a traitor.

It appears that Indians have a hard time distinguishing between heroes, tyrants and traitors. A major thoroughfare in the capital of India is named after Aurangzeb, a tyrant who committed wholesale murder. No one really seems to mind. I would not be the least surprised if in time to come, streets are named after Bhutto and Musharraf in India.

As India is a universal adult franchise democracy, the people choose the leaders and if the leadership is wanting, the buck has to stop at the people. Some people blame the media. But the media strictly reflects the sentiments of the people. The Times of India is exhibit #1. That paper’s schemes are basically anti-India to the core. Yet its circulation is in the tens of millions. The Indian public buys that paper. That newspaper may be publishing unadulterated crap. But the reason it supplies crap is that the Indian public demands crap. That’s the law — demand creates its own supply. In any self-respecting population, these sort of newspapers and TV channels would go out of business yesterday. In India, they do a roaring business.

Indians are alright with a few hundred Indian citizens dying every now and then through terrorism. Nov 2008 terrorist attacks on Mumbai did not faze them. They voted the Congress into power — the same party that pretty much set up the conditions for the terrorism.

The unfortunate fact is that even if a 100 million Indians were killed by terrorism — and that is not likely to happen — but even if 100 million were killed, it would not make all that much of a difference to Indians. There will still be over a billion Indians left. An entire state got ethnically cleansed and all the Hindu Kashmiris were made homeless. Indians don’t mind that. The continue to vote for the Congress party. A few thousands here and there dead don’t matter all that much. Let’s put those numbers in perspective. A few thousand children die EVERY DAY from preventable causes. Does not bother Indians, does it? The Congress party engineers the poverty that kills by the hundreds of thousands every year. Indians find that totally acceptable.

Indians love cricket and Bollywood. The newspapers and TV channels understand that and they do what they have to do. If the media is a prostitute, the leaders of the nation are pimps who are duly elected by democratic processes which include all sorts of fair elections. Prostitutes and pimps would not be in business without the johns. The johns are the most essential factor for the flourishing business of pimps and prostitutes.

It’s all karma, neh?

  1. Hard-hitting as usual and well said. Nothing will change unless we demand our right to national security. India might be one of the rare countries where national security isn’t an election platform.

  2. No such right to national security. Free men have a right to self-defence and private property. Free men also have the right to local self-governance.

Fuck New Delhi. The People must take arms against the tyrant government.

  3. Hi Atanu,

You have not mentioned a word about the Sena. Two days before, the Maharashtra CM was complaining about diversion of police force from regular policing into protection for the film. Now this has happened. Now they will start blaming each other again and media will make money.
SRK sucks big time and so are others. Our National Anthem should be “God save the country”.

  4. Atanu,

its unfortunate yet again. Everytime I open an Indian website like Rediff or so, an anticipation of “ok, today no terror attack has happened” occurs almost unconsciously…

Today I had a cringe when I came to know about terror attack in Pune. Was worried about you first…I may be a lil selfish when I say immediate friends and relatives matter first – despite the fact that all others are as much our brothers as personal relatives and friends.

A sigh of relief (that none of my friends or relatives were victims), helpless frustration, and moving on in a “not in my control – what can I do about it…” is what describes my state of mind every time a terror attack happens…

However, in all this there is one thing I would like to point out. — If you are 20 and not a communist, you have no heart…… — Not only in India, but abroad, especially in the US, the Cultural Left dominates academia, which in turn goes into the media. Please do a post on Cultural Left in academia and the media.

  6. Atanu,

We like illusions. Our leaders provide it and our media presents it. The real issues are forgotten. And hence they repeat.

We love it when stereotypes such as Cricket and Bollywood are chosen define us and our identity, because we are too lazy to find out who we are and where we come from. Frankly speaking it’s a hard task, and the resulting truth may not be pleasant, so we have chosen (consciously or otherwise) to outsource it.

Articles such as yours attempt to wake us from our state of blissful sleep. But then, we are gifted with a short memory span, so we shall forget this too and go back to our dreams.

Haven’t you learnt anything from Bollywood at all ? Especially that thing: Aall eej well ?

Or maybe it was those evil Hindutva people who orchestrated the blast to make the Religion of Peace look bad.

Or, perhaps the bechaare desperate men had been left with no other option, by America and Zionism, than to blow up other people.

  9. Atanu ji,

I understand your grief, and the reason for being sarcastic – and also the intention, to probably to shake up, or may be to really express desperation that Indians are being self-destructive.

I would further say that you are a great and very learned and smart man. I could go on to praise you too… and you certainly deserve so… for many reasons, one being your insightful blog, and enlightening views. (I dont know much about your work, and have read only a few posts here, and have found them very enlightening).

I am just a common man, not very smart, nor learned either (actually have been poor in studies)… just a coder, with some acquaiteance of the internet.

What I really want to say that I believe that these sarcastic mails will do no purpose.

Few days ago I was watching Ben 10 cartoon with my 4 year son – and it had something like a magician has hypnotized the whole city.

I got this thought then that probably we are not just self-destructive out of no reason – probably we are kindof hypnotised. Or in kindof slumber.

What is needed is that somehow the ones who are really awake join hands and try their best to bring people to real wake state. Teach them to be more aware.

And this is probably what is being done – by people like you, by blogs, various campaigns (of NGO, etc). But the common man is not connected with the Internet. Do you think you are really reaching the masses. Probably not.

I am just insignificant and non-existent as compared to you. My views certainly will have many many flaws. But I believe its no use being negative – please come up with some better solution.

What do you think is the solution?
Rather to be more particular – what would your advice be for a person like me? Kindly write a post telling all the people on the internet who read your blog, how they could really wake up the people around, kindly share some plan, kindly direct us in this regard, kindly just not be sarcastic – that we ought to die slowly (it really hurts, and is scary).

Kindly show us some hope and direction.

(Its past midnight, and I am not sure why I have written such a long post really, I generally do not even post on blogs, just read them, but still have written so going ahead with the post)

Kindly excuse me for my mistake and incorrectness and poor reasoning.

The people who framed our polity were so far sighted that no matter what calamity strikes us we’ll be content with Mera Bharath Mahan & My name is Khan.
I suggest the government rewrite the dysfunctional books for the Police & IB etc.. The sole function of all the law & order agencies should now be to provide security to the Stars ; our sole representatives of a 3000 yr old culture and make sure the movies get a free run and yes that our wonderful cricket matches are played till defeats rob us of any remanant self esteem.

  16. First and foremost, we Indians need a responsible and a balanced media, owned by Indians.
Second, there is an urgent need to educate not only Indians but people all over the world, the evil effects of Jihad. Defeating Jihad is going to be a very long battle, but a necessary one and a ideological one. The only medium for this is the Internet. And defeating Jihad means not being blindly anti-islamic. Enligthened muslims need to be involved as well. The battle may be a combination of Ideological and Physical. Thus opponents of Jihad should be physically able people. Long term peace is not easy to achieve and non-violence alone is not always the solution.
Thirdly, Indians need to be educated the basics of democracy and the importance of a free society. Indians will have to understand the difference between a monarchy and a republic. Dynastic politics should be shunned.

    1. Top down handpicking of candidates in violation of all eligibility criteria on the books for the purposes of true representation of constituents;
    2. partisan propagandist campaigns by so-called journalist in control of the opinion making bully pulpit, in ‘you scratch my back I scratch yours’ arrangement with firmly entrenched political powers;
    3. Wide scale rigging, fraudulent rolls – not even regarded as a problem by political operatives running the election commission as long as it works in the favor of their masters, does not make for free and fair elections – it makes for going through the motions of a charade for rubber stamp ratification of royalty status of the established political bosses.

In a nation, where even the most literate have not had half an exposure to or chance to understand what a functioning democracy is supposed to be as a system beside cramming up a ‘by the people, for the people, of the people’ definition by way of civics lessons, blaming the electorate for clueless voting in what they must be able to expect as citizenship rights and accept as citizenship responsibilities, is in itself quite clueless – makes for some energetic venting; does nothing for solving problems borne of out an utter lack of leadership of integrity and commitment to the larger good, that is not allowed to emerge.

In the present Telangana agitation they kept the photo of the last Nizam ruler beside many heroes of telangana and now praising him. He is the tyrant who want to merge the hyderabad constituency with pakistan or want it to make a separate nation. Then the telangana people revolted against him and the Indian army fought with razakars (army of Nizam) and merged hyd constituency into India.. Due to this nizam 1000’s of telangana people were killed. But now the Telangana leaders are praising him that Telangana is more developed by him then now!!!! Is this not belittling the sacrifices of Telangana people who died in war against nizams??? It is an example of the degradation of leaders for power..

It was rather that one does tend to get distracted with the trivial at the expense of the important. Not a good strategy. But then the fact that India has been ruled by foreigners (and continues to be ruled by foreigners) indicates that by and large, Indians do get distracted. The present day it is bollywood (bollocks) and cricket.

  28. Hard hitting article. However I don’t feel that Indians besides Hindus are so moronic. I mean come to speak of it, Muslims will organise rallies and issue death threats to people living thousands of miles away from India at the drop of a hat. Christians, especially the Catholics and to a great extent the evangelicals are higly organised. Ofcourse for Christians and Muslims dominace and organisation mean very different things.
While a Christian would use his organisational skills to reap more heathen souls, a Muslim would use his skills to bully the polity and the society in general to be subservient to his cause.
Hindus are extremely disorganised and lethargic when it comes to standing for something that really means something.
Sadly conditions are going from bad to worse, from being apathetic the young Hindu crop is turning to self hating and ridicule. While personal introspection could be a good thing at times, we tend to be overcritical of our problems while not doing anything about them.
As for “The Time of India”, I stopped reading that third grade tabloid about five years back. Whenever I get the time I prefer to read the Pioneer. I feel it is amogst the very few newspapers which reports truthfully. Sadly truth is something that most Hindus are allergic to. They prefer to stick to their stupid cock and bull stories that all faiths are the same and that all paths lead to god and that only a few people in every community are bad and stuff.
They do all this based on their personal perceptions and popular opinions and not based on research or study of a faith.

There is a region called Chota nagpur in MP, go there sometime and see poverty at its extremes. Its not a singular region either. Not even 5% of India is benifiting from India having all these navies and armies. I mean what are you even talking about? Are you going to pickle your army and your navy when you can’t feed your poor. You are showing signs of false patriotism without being critical of the real state of affairs. The whole of Gurgaon gets chocked if it rains for even half an hour in India. We don’t even have basic infrastructure and here you are talking big guns.

Amit Kumar, what makes India a secular country? What is your interpretation of “secularism” and how does it applies to India given its history?

Is it secularism when the Indian government is the first to ban “Satanic Verses”?

Is it secularism when the media goes nuts over Mangalore pub attack, but there’s relative silence when Taslima Nasreen is attacked in Hyderabad?

Is it secularism when people go bat-shit crazy over Varun Gandhi’s statements and excoriate him, but crickets chirp when a Muslim candidate puts up an inflammatory poster (can’t find Atanu’s post on it)?

If that’s your version of “secularism” and you’re happy with it while being blind to your own double-standards, then even heavens can’t help us.

Why what’s wrong with naming Aurangazeb? How does one become communal by calling a facist by his name? Are you stupid or are you suffering from the stockholmn syndrome. Futhermore Asoka was not a religious bigot by a power hungry maniac who wanted to control lands and not people’s belief’s. Secondly Asoka repented his actions as neither his adopted faith nor the faith he was brought up in asked him to butcher people. He had his own ideology which made him do so. Aurangazeb on the other hand was a fanatical muslim and his attrocities are very well cronicled. Perhaps you could spend some time on researching how he used to treat hindus and then you would know the sort of fanatic he was. The comparison is totally nonsensical.
